Plus, how did those monkeys cross the Atlantic?
| PHOTOGRAPH BY TONY WU, NPL/MINDEN PICTURES | | Humans and a few types of whales are the only species where females live past menopause. New research shows that the older female killer whales play a key role in keeping the species going, in one way much more so than younger orca moms. (Above, a calf swimming close to its mom.)
The elder moms, a half-century of data shows, are assiduous in protecting their apex predator sons from getting injured in fights with the only other marine animal that can hurt them—other whales. But do these older moms protect their daughters, too?

| PHOTOGRAPH BY UNDERWOOD ARCHIVES, GETTY | | The struggle for equality: On July 21, 1923, women’s rights leader Alice Paul announced that she would be working on a new constitutional amendment to guarantee that, “Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction.” It was introduced to Congress as the Equal Rights Amendment.
Yet, 100 years following Paul’s announcement, women still face inequality in the U.S. A later attempt at the Equal Rights Amendment, approved by Congress in 1972 and ratified by 38 states, would guarantee women equal protection under the Constitution. It has yet to become law.
