| Decades of overhunting the gray wolf in the continental US has led to its near extinction. Since receiving protection by the ESA in 1978, the population has grown to around 7,500. National Geographic Explorer and photographer Ronan Donovan uses the power of visual storytelling to bring life to these creatures outside of Yellowstone National Park and ensure their continued protection. | | | | Long believed to be extinct, the Miami tiger beetle was rediscovered in 2007 and has been under protection of the ESA since 2016. National Geographic Explorer George Gann works to preserve this endangered species' natural habitat and ensure it has protected land to grow and flourish for years to come. | | | | The Virginia round-leaf birch was also once thought to be extinct, but after its rediscovery in the 1970s, it was the first tree species added to the ESA. Through conservation efforts, its numbers continue to grow. National Geographic Explorer and Tree Conservation Ecologist Silvia Alvarez-Clare collaborates with multiple organizations to protect species of trees facing threats. | | | | |
