| PHOTOGRAPH BY STANLEY WEISENFELD | | Maria Tallchief grew up rich a century ago, living high from the family’s Osage Nation oil revenues. She felt like her dad owned their Oklahoma town.
But during these years, more than 60 Osage members were slaughtered by white settlers for their money, a terror recounted in Killers of the Flower Moon. Her cousin lost her family in a firebombing.
Tallchief made it out—and she always said her family moved to Beverly Hills so she could become a star. She did, ultimately emerging as America’s first prima ballerina. Her dramatic leap (above) in George Balanchine’s revival of The Firebird now graces brand-new U.S. quarters as part of a special series. | | | |
