| PHOTOGRAPHS BY VISARUTE ANGKATAVANICH | | He understands the appeal of traveling the world to photograph animals. But Visarute Angkatavanich has spent years at home capturing hypnotic images of the “moving color” of Siamese fighting fish (above).
He knows it’s hard enough to get that magic moment with people. But these swirling, painterly fish? Well, Angkatavanich has a few tricks—and, over time, has come to a deeper understanding of his subjects.

| Betta beauty: Are they fish? Or are they dancers? Maybe, both. Their flowing fins and vibrant colors are a result from centuries of selective breeding, dating back to 14th century Thailand.
These Siamese fighting fish have also evolved to tolerate slow-moving, low-oxygen water—and can supplement their oxygen intake by gulping air at the water’s surface, like the golden fish (above left) is about to. | | | |
| A fish of a different color: These photos, taken two years apart, show Angkatavanich’s good fortune: different fish in the same position, something that he says rarely happens. | | | |

| | Alarming warming: Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago, is known as the fastest-warming place on Earth. Will the animals that inhabit the area (like reindeer above) evolve quick enough to survive? Photographer Stefano Unterthiner turned to the wildlife to find the answer—and snapped stunning photographs along the way.

| | The ‘magic Olympics’: The toughest audience for a magician... is a crowd of other magicians. But to become the world’s best, fooling your illusionist peers is a magic must. (Above, two women appear to levitate.) The World Championship of Magic “fits somewhere between the Harry Potter Goblet of Fire competition and the Westminster Dog Show,” Nat Geo reports—and it’s well worth the read.
