Others exchanged gifts. At hospitals, staff made sure the wounded were showered with a little Christmas spirit. And—most astonishing—spontaneous truces broke out between enemy soldiers. Here's what historians say really happened.

The habitat is a unique refuge for a species that is otherwise unable to adapt to urban environments.
