How to Talk to Kids About Homeslessness Homelessness is a complex issue that's often challenging to explain to children. Here are some questions that might come up and responses you can use to help a child better understand.
Why is this person sleeping outside? Everyone's situation is different, but it could be because this person experienced a challenging life event that meant they could no longer stay in their home.
What about their friends or family? Some people don't have friends or family to help them through a hard time. We never know what someone might be going through.
Are there any inside places they can stay? Lots of towns and cities have shelters, communcal places where someone without a house can live. But some shelters can be very busy and some people prefer the quietness and personal space they get on the street.
Can kids and families be homesless too? Yes. Some of your friends you play with at school may have families having a hard time keeping a regular place to live.
What can we do to help? Always remember that these individuals experiencing homeslessness are people just like us with similar wants and needs. Treating them with kindness and compassion can go a long way.
