| If you're not already familiar, VTI is an ETF — a pooled investment that operates similarly to a mutual fund. And the reason we want to start with an ETF is going back to a comment above. Five stocks are just a starting point. As an investor, you need to be diversifying, and an ETF is an instant way to do that. And it doesn't get much more diversified than VTI, which invests in 4,000 domestic stocks and tracks basically every publicly traded U.S. company. It's not trying to predict a winner, or filter out a loser. It won't be like buying Apple stock back in 2001, but it won't be like buying Pets.com either. In fact, VTI has seen an annual return of 8.5% since its inception back in May 2001. To put that into perspective, think of how expensive everything felt during the height of inflation. Prices felt like they were skyrocketing — and yet it was an 8.5% increase at the peak. Imagine seeing that amount grow your account instead of drain it, year over year for decades on end. And it won't cost you a fortune to invest in. VTI has an expense ratio of just .03% — meaning that for every $1000 you invest, you can expect to pay a whopping 30 cents. | This is the first of five emails | Over the next few days, we'll reveal 4 more stocks we think investors should consider to potentially build long term wealth.
